Elizabeth Simpson Kampmann Rutherfurd, 93, mother of resident

Obit-Rutherford-10-24Elizabeth Simpson Kampmann Rutherfurd of Palm Beach died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013.

Mrs. Rutherfurd was born to Marion Weaver and Robert Kampmann and was raised in Merion, Pa. Her grandfather was John Heisley Weaver, a prominent coal and railroad baron of the times.

Mrs. Rutherfurd graduated from the former Miss Knox School for Girls in Cooperstown, N.Y., and Smith College. She made her society debut in 1937 in Philadelphia. She was an avid equestrian and a champion golfer.

She married Thaddeus Harold Brown Jr. of Washington, D.C. They had three children, Thad Brown of Sandy, Utah, Bettina Irvine of Greenwich and Marshall Webb of Palm Beach. Mrs. Rutherfurd was a member of Chevy Chase Club and the Sulgrave Club.

In 1958, she moved to Palm Beach with her second husband, Dr. Robert Sarbacher, a nuclear physicist. They had a daughter, Robin Grace of West Palm Beach. In 1973, she married, Stanton Griffis, a noted diplomat and financier, who was Ambassador to Poland, Egypt, Argentina and Spain. In 1986, she married Jay Rutherfurd, a direct descendent of John Jay. In Palm Beach, she was a member of the Bath and Tennis Club and the Everglades Club, and in Southampton, the Bathing Corp., Shinnecock Golf Club, the Southampton Club and the Meadow Club.

In addition to her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren: Thad and Jennifer Brown; Andrew, William and Jonathan Irvine; Samantha Webb and Elizabeth Grace and three great grandchildren. Her life-long passion was playing bridge.
