Joan Ablitzer McPherson, 90, a Greenwich resident for 55 years, died at her home in Pasadena, Calif., on Oct. 7.
Mrs. McPherson was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 3, 1922, to the late Edward Jourdain and Jessie Ablitzer. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she graduated summa cum laude from Hunter College and earned a master’s degree at NYU.
She taught both at Hunter and Katharine Gibbs, worked for the Theatre Guild in New York and was a work study counselor at Greenwich High School from the inception of that program until her retirement in 1986.
Mrs. McPherson was predeceased by her husband, James Beverley McPherson, who died in 2005 after a 53-year marriage. She is survived by her daughter Linnea and her husband, Dana Warren, of Pasadena, Calif., son Kirk and his wife, Laura Lee Stapleton, of Old Lyme, and grandchildren Duncan and Alison McPherson.
